Construction Process of Selimiye Mosque
The exact date when the construction of Selimiye Mosque started is not known. However, it was recorded on the mosque epigraph placed on mosque gate that it started in 1568 (976 according to Islamic calendar).
In the beginning period of mosque construction, it was demanded in the order which was sent to qadi of Edirne by Divan on June 20th, 1568 that the lumber traders who had raised wood prices due to mosque construction should make price correction. Depending on this document, it can be thought that the foundation excavation of Selimiye Mosque may have started in one of the summer months following June 20th, 1568.
In Dayezade Mustafa Efendis work named Risale-i Selimiye, it was recorded that Sultan Selim assigned the construction of the Mosque to Mimar Sinan and ordered that its location to be chosen on 27th day of Sefer month, 976 according to Islamic calendar (August 21st, 1568).
